New York Islanders TV Play-by-Play Announcer

Since joining the network in 1995, Rose has served as play-by-play announcer for Islanders telecasts on FSNY. Since the 2006-2007 NHL season Rose has been sharing the Islanders TV booth alongside analyst Billy Jaffe.

In addition to this responsibilities with the Islanders telecast, Rose can also be heard calling play-by-play for the New York Mets radio broadcasts on WFAN. Rose has been calling Mets action since 1996.

Rose began with MSG in 1985 as a fill-in announcer for Rangers radio broadcasts before taking over full-time in 1989. During his time with MSG Rose was blessed with the honor of calling New York Rangers games on the radio, including their dramatic 1994 Stanley Cup Championship run. “Matteau! Matteau! Matteau! And the Rangers have one more mountain to climb!” That one name screamed three times by Rose following the game-winning goal that sent the New York Rangers to the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals will forever be cemented into the memories of Rangers fans everywhere. Stephane Matteau’s double-overtime score was as cathartic a moment as there has been for a team, and Rose’s call genuinely captured the essence of that moment.

A graduate of Queens College, Rose’s career began in 1975 when he became one of the original voices for SportsPhone. It was also that year that he began announcing on WNYC radio. In 1982-83, Rose served as radio voice of indoor soccer’s New York Arrows on WGBB radio.

Howie moved on to WHN in 1977 where he served as the station's sports director and an on-air sportscaster until 1983. In early 1984, Howie moved over to WCBS News Radio while continuing to do some freelance work for the NBC Radio network. Howie also hosted a cable TV sports show on Cox Cable between 1984-1986. In 1987, Rose became one of WFAN’s first talk show hosts and remained with the station until 1995. It was there that Rose’s involvement with the Mets began, first doing the Mets pre- and post-game shows while also handling substitute play-by-play. He also called the 1993 and 1994 NHL All-Star Games and the 1993 Stanley Cup Finals for the NHL Radio Network.

In 1997, Rose’s talents were noticed as he was nominated for a New York Emmy award for his work with both the Islanders and Mets. Other honors include a New York State Sports Broadcasters Award for his play-by-play work during the 1994 Stanley Cup playoffs and the Dick Young Award by the New York Baseball Scouts for service to baseball in the media. Rose and the rest of the FSNY Islanders crew were honored with a New York Emmy Award for their coverage of Islanders during the 1998-99 season.

Rose resides in Woodbury, NY, with his wife Barbara and their two daughters Alyssa and Chelsea.
